The Amazing Spider-Manicure!

Nail Art

Oh, readers, this post is a fun one for me to share!  You may think that with all the pastel colors around here that I am simply a girly-girl.  Not true!  Beneath my frilly, lacy outer layer you will find a cold, hard nerdy comic book geek.  Hey, sometimes your knight in shining armor is actually a knight in really tight spandex.  Don't complain, fellow princesses, you know a spandex spidey-suit is easier to clean than a full suit of armor.  Yay for wash-and-wear!  ...Moving on!

See what I did here, channeling the vintage comic book cover style?  I'm pretty proud of it... not nearly as proud as I am of these nails, though!!  I painted them on May 3rd, in preparation of my my 2nd wedding anniversary day-early dinner & movie celebration.  (What a mouthful.)  See, I really am a geek - I totally felt this was a sufficient romantic date for an important occasion.

So yes, this was nail art for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie - wait 'til you see the other hand! - but  promise that I will reveal no spoilers.  I hate spoilers!

Sunny Layering with L'oreal & Milani

Layering Nail Art / Swatch

Come on, sunshine!  You're here, you can do it - stay!  Please, please stay... it's so much easier to feel motivated when you're around...  Today I have a simple layering manicure that is bright and cheery!  I managed to knock out 3 untrieds, too!

August 2013 Hauls

Things are looking up!  My last doctor visit went well and my fluid levels are where they are supposed to be.  So long as this continues I should be able to safely carry this baby to term!  As of today that only makes 3 weeks to go, anyhow...  I'm fine with her waiting until then to come out, haha.  =)

So, this month... kind of made up for buying so little earlier in the year...  Some things were gifts though, too!  And pretty much everything else in this picture was on sale.

Usually I would have a bunch of pictures and list off everything that I accumulated, but I'm not doing that this time.  (Combine a busy week & weekend with the exhaustion of pregnancy...)  Instead I'll leave links to what I've already shown on my blog!
I've already tested more of what you see here... tune in next week for Nyx swatches and more Laquerlicious eye candy!  I think I want to try out the nail decals or foil sheets I found next...

Holographic Gem Blossoms Manicure

Nail Art / Swatch & Review

I'm wearing an extremely princess-y manicure today!  I did these nails Saturday after deciding I wanted something holographic and was inspired by some pretty glitter gradients on other blogs.  Then I realized that all the polishes I used were essentially untrieds - swatched but never used in a manicure.  So I'll be talking a bit about them, too.

So pink, so girly, so great!  For as much as I love pink I don't do pink nails that often.  I have a hard time finding the right pinks for my skintone.  These are the polishes I used:

Color Club Halo-graphic, Milani Pink Flare, Nyx Girls Dynamic Glitter and Salon Perfect Silver Sparkler.

First let's talk about Color Club Halo-graphic.  How did I let this go for so long without doing a proper manicure with it?  From the 2012 Halo Hues collection, this pink is gorgeous in the bottle and cool-toned enough that I find it wearable.  I used two coats on my thumbs, index and pinky fingers, then my regular Poshe topcoat.  Once the manicure is totally dry the holographic effect comes back 100%.  Application is good for a holographic polish, but isn't very self-leveling.

Milani Pink Flare is part of the One Coat Glitter line, but it is most certainly not opaque in one coat.  My right hand, pictured above, shows this polish at one coat on my ring finger and at two on my middle finger.  Both have one coat of Halo-graphic as a base/underwear color.  I must say I love this glitter, it is the perfect combination of soft and sparkly.  Different from my expectations but I don't like it any less.

The photos below show my left hand.  I had the good sense to wrap my tips with Halo-graphic before putting on a coat of Pink Flare, so the sheerness isn't noticeable unless you're really looking.  My middle finger (three flower-shape paillettes) is wearing 4 coats of Milani Pink Flare, and if you look closely you can still see some VNL.  As soon as I saw how sheer it was I put a base coat of Color Club Halo-Graphic down on my ring finger, and only used two coats of Pink Flare.

For the gradients I used a combination of Nyx Dynamic Glitter and Salon Perfect Silver Sparkler.  I started off by dabbing Dynamic glitter at the cuticles and then placed individual glitters from Silver Sparkler to fill in spaces that needed it.  I also used loose flower paillettes to enhance the gradient nails.  These nails would have had a lot of texture so I used extra topcoat until they were smooth and super glossy!

The only negative thing about this manicure is that it is SO sparkly that it is hard to photograph!  There is so much glitz that my camera seems to be at a loss about which nail to focus on.  Of course, that quality is also what makes it so fantastic.  I'm really enjoying this glittery, rainbow-filled manicure!  =)

January 2013 Hauls

Or, why it's going to be easy not to buy any polish during February.  (So long as China Glaze doesn't release their new holographic polishes in the US.)

I ended up with over 35 new (or new-to-me) polishes this month, the above photo is missing a few because they are either on loan or scattered through my house.  January was a good month for polish because all my end-of-the-year sale purchases arrived along with a few sakes that took place right at the beginning of January.

I snagged some Black Cat Lacquer polishes from my wishlist, they are: I Want Candy, Let Them Eat Cake, Put a Bird On It, and Women & Women First.  These came from etsy.  These are all so, so pretty!

I had a most wonderful package of Different Dimension nail polish arrive.  Mostly colors that I've helped name, but a few other pretties to swatch and review, too!  I've gotten to try most of these already, and their posts are up on the blog.  The polishes shown above are: Honesty Feels A Lot Like Mean, Orbital, Vervain, Aorta Miss You But I Don't, All Red-y In Love, A Love Hue, and Love Her? I Don't Even Lacquer!  Not pictured because it is on loan to my Mom: Yours, Mine, and Flowers.  You can find these polishes on etsy.

I picked up a couple discontinued polishes from Laquerlicious, Invitation Only and Mint N Chip Frappe.  Along with those I was sent three minis to review, Melted Ice Cream, Rainbow Sugar, and Tart Taffy.  Go check out those swatches!  These also came from etsy!

Lush Lacquer had a sale, so I picked up my first polishes from them.  The colors I picked are Glitter Girls, Mr. Bubble, Oopsie Daisy, Pebbles, Pink Panther and Slumber Party.  These are all so cute!  Visit the Lush Lacquer shop on etsy.

I snagged a couple OPI polishes from my wishlist, My Boyfriend Scales Walls and Don't Touch My Tutu!

When Zoya had their promo for three polishes my husband got me a few cremes from my wishlist: Breezi, Jolene and Wednesday.

These polishes were partly from a trade and given to me.  Pure Ice Material Girl, Milani Hot Pink, China Glaze Peachy Keen and Luna, KBShimmer Oh Splat!

And nail polish in another form - jewelry!  Sweet Tips Nails had an amazing sale, so I picked up some necklaces and other accessories.  These are really cute!  The shipping prices are really good, too.  And yes, these came from etsy, too!

So, a pretty good haul, I'd say!  A lot of polish to keep me busy this month and a lot of it from indie sellers.  The plan this month is to be good and not buy much.  ;P

November 2012 Hauls

This post was almost going to be purely nail polish.  I had all my pictures ready to go and hoped to get my hauls of November posted in a timely manner when I had a surprise before work.  I was on the phone when my husband walked in with an ARMLOAD of packages, both the look on his face and his all-encompassing gesture saying "all this stuff is for you..."  Poor guy.  I was only expecting one package, but everything I bought in the past two weeks showed up together, haha.  And because I want to keep things by month to the extent possible (and one box had a giveaway prize in it!) I'd rather take more pictures, type more, and post late.  =)

One of the first things to show up was my Cherry Culture order.  The eyeshadows are already put away so I'm snagging my picture from Instagram to show you those.

Nyx Single Eye Shadows clockwise from top: Cherry, Irises, Luxor, Seafoam Green, Baby Blue, Dust Sparkle and True Taupe in the center.  The Jumbo Eye Pencil is Black Bean.

I was really happy to grab some of L.A. Colors' new glitter polishes, I've worn 3 already!  You can see my post of swatches here.

From left to right: Candy Sprinkles, Broken Hearted, Glitter Bomb, Flurry, Tinsel and Cocktail.

I picked up three new Milani polishes, as well. These are packed with glitter! My camera couldn't pick up all the sparkle and especially vibrant blue and purple glitter.

Left to right: Lavender Fizz, Twinkle, Pink Flare.  They are all "One Coat" glitters.

The highly anticipated Color Club collection of Halo Hues - holographic beauties - were released and I couldn't resist snagging a couple, as well as two other Color Club polishes from my wishlist.

Left to right: Diamond Drops, Halo-Graphic, Harp On It, Wild At Heart.  ...Actually, every one of these polishes is technically a holo, cool!

I also managed to get my hands on some of the new China Glaze colors from their Cirque Du Soliel and fall and winter releases.

It's A Trap-eze! is another glitter-in creme polish.  Looks fun in the bottle.  Pizzazz looks a lot like the glitter in It's A Trap-eze! with a clear base instead.  Interesting...

Glistening Snow and Hello Gorgeous!  Absolutely loving the look of these microglitters...  Need to wear these soon!

Here is something that is not make-up!  I'll have a review up on these soon so I'm not going into detail, but if you couldn't tell they are a set of mini camera lenses.

At last I found a bottle of Wet 'n Wild Black Creme.  It was the only bottle in CVS, too!  I hope it is as good for me as all the race reviews make it out to be!  I also picked up Sparked.  Don't know if I really needed another pink-and-silver glitter, but I imagine it would make an awesome gradient.

Pure Ice is releasing new colors!  I liked the unique mix of colors in Treasure Hunt, I just hope it didn't get it's name because of the effort required to get those diamonds out of the bottle!  Can't wait to try this one, either.  Here is a collage I made with pictures on my phone.  =)

   Then, the mail came...

Maybe I should have broken this up into parts 1 & 2?  Haha, no worries, I'm not showing each individual item.  First off, I took advantage of the Zoya Dream Box offer to snag their new holographic microshard colors.  This picture doesn't do them justice.

Blaze, Storm, Aurora...  They are better than I imagined!  But that is typical of Zoya.  By the way, they will be doing flash promos again soon, and they were a steal last year.  You have to sign up NOW to qualify for them.  Hurry and make an account!

I sniped an eBay auction for a new stick of my favorite deodorant.  Pure Vanilla by LAVANILA.  Good stuff!  Mini review: it's natural, smells nice when I sweat, and it doesn't ruin clothing or leave residue.  Oh, plus it goes with most of my perfumes.  I have several by LAVANILA, and a few other vanilla fragrances, too.  =)

I made my first purchase from My Beauty Addiction on etsy.  Just one group photo for all this stuff now because I will be picking it apart on the blog later.  Still, look, colors!!

And finally, I'm so honored to have been chosen as a winner in Smashley Sparkles water marble contest!  That's right, my Citrus Splash marble was actually deemed worthy of a prize!  I was in third place, which originally didn't even exist, haha.  OverallBeauty generously provided the prize.  She included a cute little glass file, too!  But I'm not going into a whole lot of detail here, I'll make a separate post once I get to try my polish from Naild'It.  Thank you Kim, thank you Smashley!!

My first bottle of Naild'It polish: Summer Lovin' Melon.  Can't wait to swatch it!

So, this ended up being a lot of stuff, but very little was impulse buys thanks to crazy sales.  In fact I was pretty "meh" about most of the sales that went on!  How about you?

Nail Mail From a Blog Sale!

One of my blogger friends, Maria from Nails Made Simple was having a blog sale to clear out a bunch of polishes.  She had a couple colors from my wishlist, and some things that were just too pretty to pass up!  On Friday this box arrived in the mail:

   Hmm, bubble wrap, huh?

Kinetic Candy & Milani Disco Lights Glitter Gradient

I've been drawn to lighter colors lately.  Maybe it's because we are nearing spring, which I love, or maybe it's because I've been in such a good mood lately.  I'm not sure, but that is besides the point.  When I was looking for a color to wear on my nails yesterday I knew it had to be either China Glaze Kinetic Candy or Sweet Hook.  I was thinking of using both.  But then I spied my lovely new Milani glitter, and realized that the color paired perfectly with Kinetic Candy.  I'll try Sweet Hook another day!

I strongly suggest clicking to see the larger versions of my pictures for this mani because you can make out all the tiny glitters!  Super awesome!  In fact, I distracted a manager at work with how sparkly they are!!  This is also my very first glitter gradient manicure.  =)

Blue Glitterbomb Nails

I wanted to do some sort of "exciting" nails last weekend, but still keep it easy so I would be able to handle the manicure.  I came up with a glitter manicure that contained literally the most glitter I've ever put on my nails - I was wearing 6 different glitter polishes!!  It looked fantabulous, too.  I was really happy to have winter sunlight streaming through a window, so I went there for my pictures.

I just love this shade of blue on me, what do you think?  I need to wear more of this, haha.  Anyway, I wanted this type of blue on my nails and lots of silver holographic glitter.  I basically grabbed every polish that fit the description.

The polishes were layered in this order:
  • Milani Cyberspace - a pale blue holo, 1 coat on each nail
  • Nyx Hieroglyphics - large holo bar glitter in a clear base, 1 coat each nail
  • Essie Carnival - small holo glitter in clear base, 1 coat each nail (probably didn't need to bother with this one!)
  • Nyx Girls Under The Moon - lovely small and large hex holo glitter in blue base, 1 coat each nail
My ring finger and thumb were finished off differently, they had:
  • BonBons "Blue" - tiny blue glitter and tiny holo string glitter, clear base.
  • China Glaze Fairy Dust - micro holo glitter in clear base
I realized that the old BonBons polish was making my nails a darker blue than I wanted thanks to the blue-colored glitter.  The difference was slight, but I finished the rest of my nails like this:
  • Nyx Heiroglyphics - again, 1 coat
  • Nyx Girls Under The Moon - one more coat
And everybody got a nice thick top coat!  My nails were super glossy and didn't have any texture... and they were so sparkly!  Check out the sparkle reflections in this windowsill:

I'd say that Nyx Girls Under The Moon was the main star of this manicure - it helped me find the exact shade of blue I was going for.  It mainly leaves smaller glitter on the nails, the large hex pieces like to stay in the bottle, but it's very pretty anyway.  One of my favorite polishes from Nyx, along with Hieroglyphics, which starts seems to get better with glitter placement the more you use it.

Removal wasn't too bad, either.  I didn't have to break out the pure acetone, just used my Zoya Remove+.  I did a lot of soaking and gentle scrubbing and eventually it all came off of my nails.  I think the first coat being Milani Cyberspace helped because it removes easily.  Also, I didn't use my Orly Bonder base coat - I was afraid to!  Haha, I just used my Qtica.  I didn't have any tip wear or chips on this, but eventually the polish started to catch things down by my cuticles just because it was on so thick.

This was a fun manicure and I'm proud of my results for my first super-glitter sandwich.  I definitely want to try it again... but in pink!  Thanks for looking!

CherryCulture Haul - Lots of Nyx polish to see!

I placed an order with CherryCulture today...  I just love that site...  They have some of my favorite brands at really good prices!  Anyway, it made me realize that I never posted my last haul from them!  These beauties arrived at the beginning of the month~

Milani In a Flash, L.A. Girl Glitter Addict - Uninhibited, Nyx Blue Avenue & Purple Avenue.

Nyx Advanced Salon Formula in Winter, Beige Glitter, Hieroglyphics and Creme Glitter.

The Beige & Creme Glitter polishes weren't what I was looking for, but yes, they are metallic flakies!  I swatched them and put them up for sale on my blog sale page.  I'm working on a post of Nyx swatches so keep an eye out for that if you're curious about how they look.  Now onto the Nyx Girls nail polish.  I was so impressed with the glitters I picked up that I had to try some cremes, too.

Nyx Girls Algae, Hot Blue, Between Mauve and Purple, Forever 1989, Dark Beige, Girly

Nyx Girls Perfect Gray, Heather, Dusty Pink, Pistachio, Naked Pink, Gemma

I've already used several of these and have been happy with the formula and wear on them.  I tried to get manicure pics but the colors came out really off so it's no use posting them.  I will say that Pistachio is nearly a dupe of China Glaze For Audrey.  I mean it's so, so close that I would have thought that is what I was wearing.  Pistachio has a hint more blue, less green, is a hint less dusty, and just slightly less opaque.  So Pistachio will go to the blog sale, too.

This was a fun haul and I got several colors that are unique to my collection.  Any requests on what you'd like to see worn, just let me know.  =)

Holo Polishes Layered (again) This Time in Blue!

Not only that, but it's a video!   I made this one a while ago but was too busy with other things to post it up.  It's great to see an Nfu-Oh and Milani Holographic shifting rainbow colors right before your very eyes - check it out!

This can be watched in HD directly on Youtube, as well!  I must say it's kind of nice to share something I made when the sun was out and shining brightly...  The weather is turning cold again here.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

Holographic Polishes - Layered!

After my last Nail-of-the-Day post I dressed my fingers up a little more.  I was wearing NFu-Oh 63 - a pink holographic polish.  I added a coat of Milani 3D Holographic polish in Digital to each nail except my ring fingers, which got a coat of China Glaze Fairy Dust.  The result is lovely!

The Milani line of Holos has a micro-flakie quality to the holo particles and a fairly weak linear effect.  They are sheer enough that one coat over another color looks nice but not overwhelming; I'm happy I decided to try it over another holo!  Digital made #63 look a little pinker.  Fairy Dust gave my polish a slightly more powdery appearance and most of the fine glitter was lost in the underlying holographic polish.  There is not top coat in any of these shots.  And yes, there are a lot of pictures.

NotD: China Glaze Grape Pop & Milani Hi-Res

Today my nails are done royally in purple!  After a dreary grey week the sun is out again so I thought it would be a good time for nail pictures.  Instead the sun immediately went behind a cloud when I pulled the camera out.  These few shots turned out the best.

↑ With flash | Without flash ↓

I did one coat of China Glaze Grape Pop and one coat of Milani 3D Holographic Hi-Res on all nails except my ring fingers, which got 2 coats of Hi-Res.  The pictures of course do not capture how they are all fantastically sparkly.  Here is a shot of when my nails were at the one-coat stage:
